Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Sixth plate and quarter plate daguerreotypes of the Gould family, including:
Sixth plate daguerreotype portrait of a young boy holding what appears to be an open Warncliffe pocket knife. (Resealed, focus a bit soft, very light tarnish to edges, image a bit dark.) Housed in full leatherette case (some surface wear).
[With:] Quarter plate daguerreotype portrait of a family of five, including a young boy standing at right who appears to be the same lad featured in the daguerreotype described above. (Resealed, some light weeping on cover glass, small blemish near top edge, light tarnish to edges.) With period note behind case identifying the subjects as "James Gould, wife, Elizabeth, Harriet (Fairfield?), Hannah R (Howe), James P." Note the light from the window to the reflector screen visible in the image. Housed in full leatherette case.
Consignor relates that the images were originally found with other 19th century photographs identified to the Gould family, but no further history accompanies the pair of daguerreotypes.
Early Photography Collection of Jules Martino, Silverton, Oregon
