Lot Description

[ENSLAVEMENT & ABOLITION]. 4 documents related to enslaved persons, most from Kentucky.

Manuscript inventory of the estate of Samuel Montgomery, "orphan of Robert Montgomery dec'd." Gallatin County, [KY], 15 December 1829. 1p, 7 3/4 x 5 in. (clipped along bottom edge, creasing, toning). In part: "The 9th part of a negro man named Squiro value $400 and a negro girl named Lucinda value $300 in all $700..."

Manuscript appointment of appraisers for an estate. Pendleton County, [KY], 1835. 1p., 8 x 4 1/8 in. (creasing, minor chipping, soiling). In part: On the motion of Thomas Casey Adm[?] of the Estate of Ann Newman Decd. ordered that Henry Cleaveland John Buoy Robert Curry and Thomas Blackburn or any three of whom being first duly sworn by and they are hereby appointed appraisers to appraise in current money the personal estate and slaves (if any) of said decedent and make report thereof to this court."

Manuscript legal report of the management of an estate including enslaved persons identified by name. Gallatin County, [KY], 14 August 1848.1p., 8 x 12 1/2 in. (creasing, spotting, few small holes and clipping to second leaf). In part: "...I did at the December Term of the Gallatin County Court for the year 1834 return an Inventory to said court of four Slaves To wit Phillis, Harriet, Smith & Andrew valued in the agregate [sic] to the sum of [blank] Dollars being the whole estate of said wards...And that I have delivered to said Wards the slaves above named, together with their increase, and take their receipt for the same, which is now in my possession."

And one other manuscript document recording the receipt of a tax payment from Thomas Gooch, dated 27 August 1792, on one side, and an inscription reading, in part: "4[?] tythes 17/6; 3 negroes 7/6; 5 horses..."

Together, 4 documents related to enslavement, 3 being specific to Kentucky counties.
