Lot Description

[WORLD WAR II - ROSENTHAL, Joe (1911-2006)]. Signed photograph of the flag-raising at Iwo Jima.


8 x 10 in. black and white photograph (light soil, scattered discolorations, adhesive residue on 3 corners, light smudging to inscription) signed and inscribed "With appreciation / to Gilbert / from / Joe Rosenthal." "Joe Rosenthal A.P." appears at bottom left in the negative. Verso with Sticker identifying the image as "Official U.S. Marine Corps Photo / USMC #113062," also includes location, date, photographer, image title, and names/ranks of the soldiers who appeared in the image.

American photographer Joe Rosenthal's Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph Flag Raising on Iwo Jima would become the defining image of American victory in the Pacific and one of the most iconic images in world history. In later years when asked about the impact of this photograph Rosenthal would remark, "I took the picture; the Marines took Iwo Jima."
