Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. A pair of half plate daguerreotypes featuring groups of women, incl. a portrait of a large female class and a smaller group portrait by MEAD BROTHERS, NY.
Fascinating portrait of a large group including 18 females and 2 males, likely students and their teachers. (Surface scratching, spotting, light discoloration in areas; reglazed and resealed 2001.) Housed in a pressed paper case (some separation to upper edges, misalignment, surface wear). -- Striking portrait of 4 women seated and standing together, likely family members. (Light tarnishing to edges, debris between glass and plate, spotting to plate and mat; resealed.) Housed in a fully separated pressed paper case (top edge of case base nearly fully separated, velvet wear and loss to pad). Velvet pad stamped for Meade Brothers, 233 Broadway, New York, NY. -- Together, 2 half plate daguerreotype portraits of groups of women.
