Lot Description

Scottish needlework sampler third quarter 18th century

Worked in green and red silks on wool with a four line verse beginning 'Virtue's the chiefest Beauty of the Mind...', alphabet and number series, and flower pots and birds within a stylized floral border, framed.

NOTE: Possibly Susanna McLaughlin, born 1755, the youngest of two daughters born to Susanna [Campbell] McLaughlin and Colin McLaughlin, Kilmartin, Argyll, Scotland. At some point the spelling of the name changed from/to McLachlan.

H: 12 1/4, W 9 1/2 in.
