Lot Description

** Finely Engraved Josef Winkler O/U Drilling Rifle in .300 Weatherby Magnum

.300 Weatherby Magnum. 26" barrel length. SN: 42-2622. Satin stainless finish with blued barrels and small parts, walnut Monte-Carlo style stock with two piece forend, and featuring engraved embellishments to all parts. Double barrel over under rifle with gold plated extractors and engraved sideplates utilizing a double Kersten lock system. The barrel features the maker mark of JOSEF WINKLER - FERLACH - AUSTRIA, a gunmaker known for producing sumptuously engraved double rifles. The rifle mounts fixed iron sights atop a matted ramp and rib featuring a German claw style scope mount and a notch rear sight. The item is marked B'O'HLER ANTINIT NG to the left barrel beneath the stock along with Austrian Nitro powder proofs on the barrels and frame. The engraved pattern surrounds each detail with fine Altenglische Arabesken, or Old English Scrollwork. Details include a gold plated JRC monogram on the base of the triggerguard, and the scroll engraved pattern over the triggerplate and underside of the frame. Both sideplates are engraved with animal vignettes set within a wooded background. The right sideplate features a rearing bear set behind the cocking indicator, its jaws open and roaring toward the rear sideplate. A ram flees to the right, towards the barrels. The left sideplate is engraved with a wild boar wandering below the barrel flats while a male Roe Deer (Roebuck) looks on from the rear plate. The barrel fences are engraved with further Altenglische Arabesken flowing upward over the fences but changing to fish fin pattern over the length of the watertables. The toe of the stock features a compartment for three cartridges with an engraved hatch with a scroll bordered boar, along with a threaded hole for mounting a sling swivel stud. The highly figured walnut stock features multipoint checkering on the wrist and forend, and mounts a synthetic pistol grip cap. The left stock features a German style cheek pad with a stabilized wood knot toward the forward edge of the cheek piece. The stock additionally mounts a Pachmayr recoil pad atop a white line spacer. The serial numbers on the forend, the barrel, and the frame all match.
