Lot Description

Contemporary Flintlock Jaeger Rifle with Actaeon and Hunting Motifs by John B. Derrick (American, b.1936)

.54 caliber. 31" octagonal barrel length. SN: NSN. Browned metal finish. Walnut stock has rococo scroll carved to wrist, forearm, and buttstock with an elk stag carved to right side of wrist. Flintlock jaeger rifle with a neoclassical notch rear sight and fleur-de-lis brass blade front sight. Item features a patchbox on left side, double set triggers, and an early Germanic-style lock from Jim Chambers. Forearm is fitted with carved elk horn panels that depict successive hunting scenes with skeleton hunters and bears on both sides. Comb has carved elk horn German knotwork fittings, there is a devil grotesque in front of triggerguard, and bottom edge of buttstock has fittings of neoclassical and grotesque motifs. Left side face of buttstock has several carved elk horn fittings depicting the allegory of Actaeon and his hounds. Side panel on left side has three elk horn fittings showing a hunter with knife, a dragon, and what appears to be a hound. Top of wrist has an elk horn fitting carved JD/Fecit. Patchbox cover has elk horn German knotwork fittings intertwined with grotesques and neoclassical motifs. Triggerguard is cast silver in the form of a mermaid, and ferrules are also cast silver with a grotesque throat. Included with item is a wood ramrod with carved elk horn tip.
