Lot Description
[SHIPWRECK]. A Journal of the Travels and Sufferings of Daniel Saunders, jun. Salem: Thomas C. Cushing, 1794.
12mo. (Overall browning and staining.) Contemporary calf (modern rebacking, some wear). Provenance: Sarah Tallants (signature, Pelham, 1807).
FIRST EDITION of this rare account of an American mariner's shipwreck off the coast of Oman. "The Commerce was caught in a typhoon in the Indian Ocean while trying to reach the Malabar Coast of India. When she struck in the storm her people were sure that they were on the Indian coast, and could hardly believe that the ship had been driven to Arabia. There were various difficulties with the Arabs, and great trouble in getting passage back to India, but Saunders finally succeeded in returning to the United States" (Huntress 120c). With a 15pp. appendix at the end containing one of the earliest American descriptions of Arabia. Evans 27671; Sabin 77172.
