Octavo. Engraved folding map of part of Africa by Laborde (a few repairs to folds verso); half-title. IN ORIGINAL BOARDS UNCUT, printed paper label on spine (a few discreet repairs to spine, corners bumped, some minor soiling); cloth folding case. Provenance: Engraved 19th-century bookseller's label on pastedown; tiny bookseller's pencil annotation dated 1986 on pastedown.
FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, detailing the authors' shipwreck off the west coast of Africa and subsequent enslavement by the Arabs. During their imprisonment, they learned the Arabic language and observed African rulers. Their account of the region of Africa that would come under French rule includes a description of the slave trade at Senegal and Galam. Cox I: 391; ESTC T147513.
