Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 5 CDVs of Key West, Florida, incl. Fort Zachary Taylor and the Naval Hospital.
5 CDVs, 3 3/4 x 2 1/4 in., or smaller, on cardstock mounts (light toning, minimal spotting; mount edges trimmed). Uncredited, Civil War-period cartes of important landmarks in Key West, Florida, each with manuscript identification on verso.
Locations include: Key West Light House. -- Episcopal Church and Parsonage. -- Naval Hospital. -- Custom House. -- Fort Zachary Taylor.
During the Civil War, Key West was the center of naval operations and the base for the blockade of the South. At one time, 299 captured Confederate ships were held in the Key West Harbor under the guns of the fort. Built at Key West during the Mexican War (1846-1848), Fort Zachary Taylor was held by Union forces throughout the Civil War.
