Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. Tintype of a triply armed corporal with musket, pistol, and knife.

Approx. 2 x 3 1/8 in. seated portrait of a corporal wearing a Hardee hat with infantry hunting horn encircling regimental number "13" and inverted oval "US" belt plate. He holds a Model 1816 musket to one side and wears a Colt revolver and side knife in his belt. (Some abrading and puncturing to image surface particularly around edges, good clarity; unsealed but loosely taped to mat.) Housed in a CDV-size Union case (soiling, chipping to edges).

Interestingly, the regimental numbers are presented correctly (not inverted), but the subject's oval belt plate appears inverted. If the subject had wanted to "correct" the belt given the reverse image the camera would have produced, he might have turned it upside down, but that does not appear to be the case here.
