Lot Description
GRANT, Ulysses S. (1822-1885). Autograph letter signed ("U.S. Grant"), as Lieutenant General. City Point, VA, 25 October 1864. With original cover addressed in Grant's hand.
1 1/4 pages, 5 x 8 in. Creased at old folds, soiling, some ink fading, discoloration. On "Head-quarters Armies of the United States" letterhead. With accompanying "Headquarters Armies of the United States" cover addressed by Grant and cancelled in Washington, DC (missing flap).
In this letter to L. I. Leberman of Philadelphia, "Ch. Com. on Clothing," (Chairman Committee on Clothing), Grant returns thanks for a suit of clothes made to his measure, which he received and previous acknowledged, though his first reply was apparently lost. He writes, "I will again express my thanks to Messers Rockbill & Wilson for this liberal donation to a human and patriotic cause."
It is likely that the clothing in question had been made for display at the "Great Central" sanitary fair held in Philadelphia the previous June.
Property from the Augustana Collection
