Lot Description

GRANT, Ulysses S. (1822-1885). Personal check signed ("U.S. Grant"). New York, 11 November 1881.


7 3/8 x 3 in. partially printed check drawn on the United States National Bank. Payable to "Purdy & Nicholas," for the sum of $205.22. Cut cancellation through check, ink stamped "5" at lower right, and Purdy & Nicholas stamp and inscription on verso (folds, tape and paper residue on verso). 

[With:] GRANT, Ulysses S. III (1881-1868), grandson of Ulysses S. Grant, Colonel 1st Engineers, US Army. Autograph note signed ("U.S. Grant 3d"), addressed to Miss Mary Atwood. Fort Du Poet, Delaware, 1935. 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 in. printed card with imprint "Colonel U.S. Grant, 3rd, Commanding 1st Engineers, Fort Du Pont, Delaware" (minimal spotting). Grant conveys President Grant’s check: "Here is a check signed by my Grandfather, President Grant, as requested by your letter of June 27, 1935."

Provenance: Descended directly in the family of Mary Atwood Pool (1914-2009). Washington, DC, resident Mary Atwood Pool began collecting autographs of notable American historical figures at the age of 14, with each autograph acquired by her direct communication with the historical figure, their staff, family members, or attorneys.
