Lot Description
[CRIME & PUNISHMENT]. A group of 3 CDV "mug shots" of identified criminals. Ca 1880s.
Bust portrait of a man with untidy, receding hair and mustache, identified by verso inscription as James Higby, a 30-year-old arrested for larceny on 15 November 1883 and jailed for 30 months. -- Bust portrait of a woman wearing an interesting, tall hat and squinting her eyes. She is identified by verso inscription as Katie Friday, a 28-year-old arrested for fraud and larceny on 11 December 1889. -- Bust portrait of an African American man wearing a ha, identified by verso inscription as Joseph Gray, a 24-year-old arrested for attempt at outrage on 23 February 1884. -- Together, 3 CDVs, each 2 1/4 x 3 5/8 in., or smaller, on cardstock mounts. Toning, significant soiling, some wear/surface loss to images, with wear to mounts present in all. Framed together to 17 x 17 1/2 in (not examined out of the frame).
Ink inscriptions identifying subjects and providing physical descriptions and information about their arrests are featured on versos, which have been photocopied, cut, and displayed beneath each CDV in the frame.
