Lot Description

Commemorative copper-plate printed handkerchief germantown print works, germantown, pennsylvania, 1824

Square format with scroll border enclosing "Friends Meeting House corner of Arch near 4th St. in 1824" above scene (after Benjamin West - 1820) commemorating William Penn's historic 1681 treaty with the Indians, printed in sepia on linen ground in a grain-painted frame.

Note:
This handkerchief was printed with a companion piece showing a portrait of General Lafayette and scenes of his arrival in Philadelphia and New York in 1824. Florence Montgomery comments in 'Printed Textiles, English and American Cottons and Linens 1700-1850' 1970, p.285, that "as a symbol of brotherly love, Benjamin West's painting of the treaty had lasting popularity, especially among Pennsylvania Friends."
