Manuscript Letter Archive. Washington, John Augustine, Jr., other family members & in-laws. Mount Vernon, etc., 1840s - 1870s. Approx. 140 letters.
John Augustine Washington, Jr. was the grand-nephew of George Washington & the last owner of Mt. Vernon. As a Confederate Lt. Col., he served as an aide-de-campe to R.E. Lee and was killed in action at Elkland, Va. on Sept. 13, 1861.
This archive contains 8 John Augustine Washington, Jr. ALS's; the rest are letters from family members - J.A. Washington, Jr.'s mother, wife, children, cousins & in-laws (incl. Alexander family members) - from their homes: Waveland, Salem Va.; Blakeley, W.Va.; Mt. Ida, Alexandria, Va., etc. Many contain references to Mount Vernon ("That audacious beast Abraham Lincoln is renting out Mt. Vernon") & to Civil War news & events.
This archive which also includes a few relics (locks of the hair of J.A. Washington, Jr., his wife and mother, violets taken from Mt. Vernon by J.A. Washington, Jr. as he left for war in 1861), was part of the collection of the Confederate agent Beverly Tucker, who was married to J.A. Washington Jr.'s daughter, Anna Maria.
