Lot Description

[MEDICINE]. 2 medical photographs, incl. image of surgeon Hugh Owen Thomas & Robert Jones.

6 1/4 x 4 1/2 in. (sight) photograph, matted and framed, 12 1/2 x 9 3/4 in. (light soiling, some fading to print, unexamined outside frame). A curious photograph showing British orthopedic surgeon Hugh Owen Thomas (center) and his nephew Robert Jones (right) tending to a patient who appears to be in pain. A man at left assists in holding the patient down.

A similar portrait of Hugh Owen Thomas wearing a cap and smoking a cigarette is illustrated in an article published in Contemporary Orthopaedics, August 1992, Vol. 25, No. 2 (copy of article enclosed with lot and available upon request). Another photograph, likely taken around the same time, showing Hugh Owen Thomas and Robert Jones is viewable online.

Hugh Owen Thomas (1834-1891) and his nephew Robert Jones (1857-1933) have been called "the Fathers of orthopaedic surgery." Descended from a line of Welsh bone setters, Thomas placed great importance on rest in treatment of fractures.

[With:] 9 3/4 x 6 in. photograph on cardstock mount, matted and framed, 13 1/2 x 10 1/2 in. (some edge wear to mount visible, unexamined outside frame). An image capturing a surgery, with a surgeon at center, surrounded by assistants and nurses. The patient is not visible.

Property from the James Milgram, M.D., Collection of Broadsides, Ephemeral Americana, and Historical Documents
