Lot Description
[CARSON, Christopher "Kit" (1809-1868)]. CDV of Christopher "Kit" Carson in uniform. Ca early 1860s.
2 1/8 x 3 5/8 in. CDV on cardstock mount (toning, light fading, occasional spotting to print; soiling, edge and corner wear to mount). Uncredited. A rare pose of Kit Carson dressed in the military garb befitting his status as a colonel in the 1st New Mexico Volunteer Infantry.
Christopher "Kit" Carson, a noted trapper, guide, and Indian Agent, commanded campaigns against the Apache, Comanche, and Navajo, most of whom surrendered to him in 1863, forcing nearly 8,000 on the "Long Walk" of 300 miles from Arizona to Fort Sumner, New Mexico.
