Lot Description

CHOATE, John N. (1848-1902), photographer. Boudoir card featuring a trio of Santee Sioux students of Carlisle Indian School, identified on mount as Henry Standing Bear, Wounded Yellow Robe, and Timber Yellow Robe. Carlisle, PA, ca 1883.

Approx. 5 x 7 7/8 in. boudoir photograph on cardstock mount (light toning and soiling to print; mount with toning and wear to edges and corners); framed to 12 9/16 x 15 3/4 in. (not examined out of frame). Mount recto bears Choate's Carlisle, PA blindstamp along with ink identification of each subject: "Henry Standing Bear, Wounded Yellow Robe, Timber Yellow Robe." 

Wounded Yellow Robe (who also went by Richard Yellow Robe), Henry Standing Bear, and Timber Yellow Robe (who also went by Chauncey Yellow Robe), each entered the school at Carlisle in November of 1883. This portrait shows the three boys as they were dressed upon entering the school. The trio had their picture taken together multiple times throughout their time at Carlisle, wearing school garb.
