Northern Cheyenne warrior Bobtail Horse had fought in the Battle of Little Big Horn, defending a ford from approaching soldiers in Custer's immediate command. He later enlisted as a scout under General Nelson Miles.

John N. Choate (1848-1902) began a long photographic career at Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1879 when the famous Carlisle Indian Industrial School was founded.
