BANVARD, John (1815-1891). Description of Banvard's Panorama of the Mississippi River. Boston: John Putnam, 1847.
8vo (216 x 133 mm). (Some dampstaining and spotting, marginal chipping to a few leaves.) Modern brown roan-backed cloth; original printed yellow wrappers bound in (some chipping and staining). Provenance: Dudley Bell Priester (1923-2017), Mississippi River collector and bibliographer (sold Bloomsbury, 20 November 2009, lot 59).
FIRST EDITION, based on the description of Banvard's panorama painting, advertised as the "largest picture ever executed by man" on "three miles of canvas," (but was only a half-mile in length), depicting the Mississippi River Valley from the mouth of the Missouri River to the City of New Orleans.
