First edition. 8vo, orig. blind-stamped green cloth, spine gilt, brown endpapers; light wear, lower corners bumped & rubbed, other light wear to edges & joints, very slightly cocked, front hinge split, back hinge stressed, minor wear & discoloration to endpapers. Edmonds & Reman binder's ticket on back paste-down.
Complete with half-title, folding diagram at p. 17 & 32 pp. of Murray's adverts, dated June, 1859. Light crease to half-title, very occasional, very light foxing. Freeman's binding variant A, third state of adverts.
A generally bright, clean & sound (despite front hinge) copy of this first edition of the most important scientific book of the 19th-century and the most influential book in the history of natural science. 1,250 copies were printed and then distributed & sold almost immediately.
