Lot Description
[POLITICS - 1936 ELECTION]. [LANDON, Alfred "Alf" (1887-1987)]. Photographic album from an Alf Landon Parade.
Scrapbook, brown leather, obl. 7 x 12" (approx.) with 27 photographs (4-1/2 x 6-1/2") with ink hand-written captions on the facing pages.
The Republican National Convention was held 9-12 June and nominated Alf Landon as its presidential nominee. This left the majority of the summer for Landon to campaign. This booklet documents a parade held in the heat of summer (one caption indicates it was 105 degrees at street level). In some of the early images, subjects wear sunflower hats and carry sunflowers on poles a symbol used extensively in Landon's campaigns.
One photograph caption notes that a pipe the central figure is smoking has a label: "Smoking out the New Deal with Landon." There are other photos showing people clustered together in whatever shade they can find - even the shadow of the local department store. The parade includes a large picture of Alf Landon, bands, horse-drawn carriages, stagecoaches and ox teams, Native Americans on horseback, cowboys. Unusually, it also includes a train in the middle of the parade celebrating the Santa Fe Railroad.
