Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Album containing photographs of Egypt, Italy, and Brussels, incl. images by Félix BONFILS and Hippolyte ARNOUX.
Oblong large quarto (11 x 15 in.) 275 x 285 mm. 50 albumen photographs, of which 21 measure 8 1/2 x 11 in., with the remaining images ranging in size from 2 1/4 x 3 3/4 in. to 6 1/2 x 8 3/4 in. The photographs are mounted recto/verso to 10 1/4 x 14 in. album pages. (toning, soiling and spotting to prints; toning, some areas of significant soiling, and spotting to album pages, which have detached from binding). Half morocco gilt (lacking spine, sigificant wear to extremities). Some photographs are titled in negative, lower margin of print, or captioned in pencil on album page.
Highlights include: 4 photographs credited to BONFILS showing Cairo and the pyramids at Giza. -- 4 photographs credited to ARNOUX showing the Sphinx, pyramid at Chephren, and the pyramids at Giza. -- 7 photographs credited to A. NOACK showing Albenga and Alassio, Italy.
The album also contains studio portraits of native Egyptians. -- Multiple photographs of European paintings and sculpture. -- Multiple views of landmarks in Brussels.
