Lot Description

[NATIVE AMERICANS]. A group of documents related to the Sioux, Chippewa, and Cherokee Indians, ca first quarter 20th century.

A group of documents related to the Sioux, Chippewa, and Cherokee Indians, highlighted by notes on the political climate at individual districts of the Pine Ridge Reservation and occurrences from a General Council meeting, ca first quarter 20th century.

"Black Hills - Notes." Manuscript notes, pencil on lined paper, by unidentified author. 7pp, 8 x 10 in. (heavy toning, brittle paper, oxidized metal clasp). Notes provide specific details on individuals residing at Wahkpamini, White Clay Creek, Wounded Knee, Porcupine, Medicine Root, Eagle's Nest, and Allen (Pass Creek) Districts of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation with a focus on their past and present political affiliations.

Unidentified author provides observations by district, as in this statement regarding "Agency - Wahkpamini": "The Indian Employes [sic] active in keeping down Indians who get any influence,. Calico, and Iron Whiteman are in the dist. Generally get elected as delegates. Not much use for agency crowd. James Redcloud son of "Jack" (deceased) is looked upon as Chief. Spotted Crow is a youong man (45) and supported SB [Sitting Bull?]. At last election James Red Cloud, Calico, Iron white man, Spotted Crow, & Jacob White Eyes (Govt [?]) to atten the Genl C. at agency." A fascinating document worthy of additional research.

[With:] Map of the "Cherokee Nation. I.T. Recording District Number 3. Also Showing the Oil Fields." Osage Mapping Co.: Bartlesville, IT, ca 1904. 40 x 37 1/4 in. (creasing along folds, tears along folds, losses especially along edge lines). 

[Also with:] A group of 6 documents and pieces of correspondence related to Chippewa Indians, some addressed to attorney Daniel Henderson and associated with his work representing the legal interests of various Indian tribes.
