Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. Copy CDV featuring an illustration of a documented Indian attack in Kansas. Ca 1868-69.
2 1/4 x 3 3/4 in. CDV on cardstock mount (some darkening to image, with soiling and wear to edges, mount with significant soiling and wear to edges and corners). Verso bears period ink inscription reading, "Attack upon a Waggon [sic] train going to Ft Wallace for suplies [sic]," and modern pencil inscription, "attack 1868 15 miles east of Ft. Wallace. - Cheyenne, Arapaho, Sioux - Prelude to Beecher's Island." The illustration features a wagon train encircled by Native American warriors on horse.
We were notified by a savvy customer that the illustration photographed to create this CDV was a plate in Whittaker's Life of Custer, published in late 1876. It appears opposite page 371 and is titled "The Attack Upon the Train," and appears at the start of Chapter III, which discusses the attack at or near Fort Wallace. Another example of the CDV showing the same image, also on a pink mount, includes the backmark of W.R. Cross, Norfolk & Niobrara, Nebraska.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
