Lot Description
[EDISON, Thomas A. (1847-1931)]. Edison Type 3-A Universal Stock Ticker. Late 20th century.
Iron, brass, and steel "Universal Ticker" machine, 10 in. height, with glass dome, 12 in. height overall. Ticker with lacquered brass mechanism, circular stepped base with original black paint (some tarnish to brass, wear consistent with age and use). Brass supports stamped with serial number, "1259," and "UNIVERSAL TICKER / 3-A / 22-OHMS." Provenance: Purchased from the Carey Estate, Springfield, Ohio, 1997 (consignor's note).
Ticker tape machines, which were named for the ticking sound they made, printed stock prices in real time as they were sent over telegraph wires from the stock exchange floor.
