Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. A collection of 8 delightful daguerreotype portraits of groups of 3 or more children, including:
Half plate portrait of three children, the youngest holding onto the arm and shoulder of her big brother. (Tarnishing to edges, spotting and clouding throughout; sealed in frame.) Housed in a frame with ink inscription on verso identifying the subjects as Robert Henry Stockton (b. 1842), William Edward Stockton (b. 1840), and Mary Summersall Stockton (b. 1844), and dating the image to the summer of 1852 or 1853. -- Sixth plate portrait of three siblings, each with full cheeks hand-tinted pink. (Some tarnishing to edges, scattered clouding and debris settled on plate, spotting to mat; retains portions of original seal.) Housed in a fully separated pressed paper case (surface wear). -- Sixth plate portrait of a group of 4 children, posed in a square, the youngest two in front, posed affectionately. (Spotting and deterioration in areas throughout image plate; resealed 1996.) Housed under mat, glass, and preserver only, no case. -- And 5 others, including 3 quarter plate portraits and 2 sixth plate portraits, each housed in fully separated cases. -- Together, 8 charming portraits of groups of children.
