Lot Description

[NATIVE AMERICANS]. O'SULLIVAN, Timothy (1840-1882), photographer. A group of 7 Wheeler Expedition stereoviews of Southwestern Indian subjects, including: 


6 x 3 5/8 in. stereoviews on cardstock mounts (overall very good condition, strong tonality, few with light soiling, few with light corner and edge wear to mounts). Rectos feature series titles "Expedition of 1873" (3) or "Expedition of 1874" (4) and "1st Lieut. Geo. M. Wheeler, Corps of Engineers Commanding" imprint. Versos with "War Department, Corps of Engineers, USA. Geographical Explorations and Surveys West of the 100th Meridian" imprint, credit to T.H. O'Sullivan, image number and title.

Image numbers and titles include: No. 19, Group of Zuni Indian "Braves," at their Pueblo, NM. -- No. 20, War Chief of the Zuni Indians. -- No. 29, Navajo Brave and his Mother. The Navajos were formerly a warlike tribe until subdued by US Troops, in 1859-60. Many of them now have fine flocks, and herds of horses, sheep and goats. -- No. 39, Pay-ge, a Ute Squaw, of the Kai-poh-teh band, Northern New Mexico. -- No. 40, Ute Braves, of the Kah-poh-teh band, Northern New Mexico, in "full dress." -- No. 41, Jicarilla Apache Brave and Squaw, lately wedded. Abiquiu Agency, New Mexico. -- No. 42, Shee-zah-nan-tan, Jicarilla Apache Brave in characteristic costume, Northern New Mexico
