Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS] -- [EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. A group of 7 stereoviews, incl. Southern Cheyenne subjects by John K. Hillers and landscape scenes of the Potomac River.
6 x 4 1/4 in., or smaller, stereoviews on cardstock mounts (occasional spotting and some soiling to prints; some edge and corner wear to mounts). Although rectos feature the series title "Canons of the Colorado River of the West" and "US Topographical and Geological Survey of the Valley of the Colorado, by J.W. Powell and A.H. Thompson" imprint, the subject matter does not relate to the information on the mounts.
Included are 2 stereoviews of Southern Cheyenne Indians taken by John K. Hillers in Indian Territory in 1875, each with manuscript identification, image number, and previous owner's initials to verso. Subjects include: No. 43, White Shield and son. -- No. 74, Benanset, or "Big Mouth" (although the identification may be inaccurate).
[With:] 5 stereoviews of the Potomac. River, most including a small group of men within the composition, each with credit to "Jones, photo," manuscript identification, image number, and previous owner's initials to verso.
