Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. HILLERS, John Karl. (1843-1925), photographer. A group of 22 Powell Expedition stereoviews of Native American subjects and landscape views, including:
6 1/8 x 4 3/8 in. stereoviews on cardstock mounts (overall very good condition, strong tonality, some with light soiling; corner and edge wear to mounts, incl. some with surface abrasions). Rectos feature series titles "Canons of the Colorado River of the West" and "US Topographical and Geological Survey of the Valley of the Colorado, By J.W. Powell and A.H. Thompson" imprint. Most versos with applied paper labels including "Department of the Interior, US Geographical and Geological Survey of the Rocky Mountain Region" imprint, credit to Hillers, image number and title.
Native American subjects from the "Indians of the Colorado Valley" series include: No. 14, Kai-Vav-Its, Group of Women in Full Dress. -- No. 15, Kai-Vav-Its, Kindling a Fire by Friction. -- No. 18, Kai-Vav-Its, Pile of Little Indians. -- No. 27, Kai-Vav-Its, Won-Si-Vu or Young Antelope. -- No. 31, Kai-Vav-Its, Won-Si-Vu at Rest (top left corner creased). -- No. 33, Kai-Vav-Its, Chu-Ar-Ru-Um-Peak and his Family. -- No. 34, Kai-Vav-Its, The Game of Ni-Aung-Pi-Kai. -- No. 57, Mo-A-Pa-Ri-Ats, "Five and Three are Eight." -- No. 71, Moqui Maidens, Northern Arizona (manuscript identification to verso). -- No. 74, Nu-A-Gun-Tits, Ta-Noats.
