Lot Description
[MINING -- CALIFORNIA]. A receipt, tax document, and medical document from the California mining frontier. Placerville, CA, 1890-1891.
Partly-printed tax document. Placerville, El Dorado County, CA, 15 November 1890. 9 1/2 x 8 5/8 in. partly-printed document completed in manuscript. Completed for Alonzo Vandenberg for "the sum of fifteen 54/100 Dollars, being the total amount of State and County Tax due on the following described property for the year 1890-91." The list includes a parcel of land and livestock. -- Partly printed medical receipt for Mr. Vanderberg. Placerville, CA, 3 December 1891. 8 1/4 x 3 7/8 in. -- Invoice for Mr. Vandenberg from Mierson & Jewell. Placerville, CA, 16 January 1890. 8 1/2 x 4 1/2 in. partly-printed document. Mr. Vandenburg had purchased several goods, including a coat and a pair of shoes. The proprietors note "The above is of long standing, please settle..." The letterhead includes an advertisement that "We purchase Gold Dust..."
Vandenberg (1843-1918, also listed as Vandenburg), is listed in a multitude of records including censuses, voter registrations, and land office records. Originally from Saratoga Springs, NY, he is listed as a resident of El Dorado County as early as 1866 and his occupation as "gold miner" as late as the 1900 Federal Census.
