Lot Description
[FLAGS & PATRIOTIC TEXTILES]. 43-star American flag. Ca 1890.
204 x 131 in. machine-sewn worsted wool flag with 43 machine-sewn, double-appliqued cotton stars arranged in 7-7-7-8-7-7 pattern (11 in. rip to middle of canton, 4 in. rip extending from top edge of canton, small scattered holes throughout, toning, soiling to stars). Hoist is cotton with jute rope (toning, some staining to hoist).
The 43 star flag became the Official US flag on 4 July 1890 and was to last for just one year. Five stars were added with the admission of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Washington, and Idaho.
