Lot Description

[PERIODICALS]. A group of 13 nineteenth-century newspapers and publications, including The Emancipator and the Catholic newspaper of the Yankton Sioux.


The Emancipator. 13 December 1838. New York: Joshua Leavitt (ed.), 4pp. Some large tears, insect/rodent damage.

Hunt, Rev. Jerome, O.S.B. S'ina Sapa Wocekiye Taeyanpaha. Fort Totten, N. Dakota; Feb. 15, 1917. Vol. XXI, No. 7, 4pp. 11 x 16 in. Published monthly by St Paul's Catholic Indian Mission of the Yankton Sioux. Mostly in Dakota.

New-York Mirror, a Weekly Journal, Devoted to Literature and the Fine Arts. 21 Feb. 1835. New-York: publ. corner of Nassau and Ann Streets, pp. 265-272. Last page has piano music for King, W.A., "The Evening Serenade."

Richmond Whig and Public Advertiser. 18 April 1843. Richmond [VA]: 4pp. Brown and brittle.

The Anglo American. 11 October 1845. New York: E.L. Garvin & Co., pp. 577 - 600. The focus seems to be literary - poems and short stories.

New-York Daily Whig. 22 July 1839. New York: Jacob Moore, ed., 6pp Contains one part of "The Adalantado of the Seven Cities," by Washington Irving. Generally only one or two columns per page with an article or story, the remainder is advertising. Interesting ads - on the first page we have ads for Cupping and Leeching (on short notice), Phrenology, Leeches supplied, plus the more typical clothing, hats, stoves, steamers, stagecoaches, railroads, and more.  Disbound, water stain along top edge.

Western Recorder. 17 May 1825. Utica (NY): Merrell & Hastings, printers, 4pp (77 - 80). "Published under the Patronage, and for the Benefit of the Western Education Society, and Auburn Theological Seminary." Lots of religious news, such as missions, revivals, ordinations, etc. Books being published include books of sermons. One of the articles is a speech given by a Wyandott Christian to a meeting of the Ohio Conference in Zanesville.

Hartford (CT): Hale & Hosmer, 4pp. Very good condition, but trimmed close to print (as made). -- Western Intelligencer. November 14, 1816. Columbus (OH): P.H. Olmted & Co., 4pp. Edge scuffing; tape repair of holes.

Captioned: "Turning down a bye-path to avoid a dunning Tailor...on arriving at the end your farther progress is stopped with a notice "No Thorofare"...at the same time your retreat is cut off by Snider taking the same road."  Affixed to light cardstock. --  Print from America Settentrionale (North America), Vol. (Tom.) III, Plate 10. Top image "Cascata del Trenton (Falls of Trenton)" and bottom image "Ponte di roccia nella Virginia (Rock bridge in Virginia)." -- Two plates from Le Valliant, F. Second Voyage dans l'interieur de l'Afrique, par le Cap de Bonne-Esperance: dans les annees 1783, '84, '85. Brussels: Ble Francq, 1797, Vol. 3. Plate 5 is "Campement a la Horde de Klaas Banter," 9.5 x 12 in., folding; and Plate 8 is "Camp de la Giraffe Sur le Bord de la Riviere, D'Orange," 10 x 15.5 in. folding. Neither is colored. -- Five plates from von Goethe, Wolfgang. Reineke Fuchs (Reynard the Fox). 1846. Wood engravings by Wilhelm von Kaulbach (1804-1879, Munich). 10.25 x 13 in. light cardstock. None with captions. -- Matted image of women with puttis, 5 x 7.25 in. Gouache over lithography. No identifications.
