Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR -- COPPERHEADS] -- [VALLANDIGHAM, Clement (1820-1871)]. Typed letter signed, 1861. 

[With:] Soldier's letter, 59th New York, to the Copperhead leader with Vallandigham's autograph signed endorsement. [Also with:] 2 CDV portraits of Vallandigham.

CLARK, Jehu C. Autograph letter signed ("Sergt. J.C. Clark") to Clement Vallandigham. Camp near Falmouth, VA, 17 March 1863. 2 pages, 8vo, some offsetting, old creases. With: VALLANDIGHAM, Clement (1820-1871). Autograph endorsement signed ("C.L. Vallandigham'). Dayton, OH, 24 March 1863. 

Clark enlisted on 1 September 1861 at Bellville, OH as a private and mustered into Co. H of the 59th New York Infantry. He was promoted twice to sergeant (7 February 1863) and to quartermaster (3 July 1864), mustering out on 3 July 1864. Here he writes to the Copperhead leader requesting his help for achieving a promotion: "Knowing your influence with Gov. S as one of the Democracy of the Buckeye State..." Vallandigham has endorsed the request.

[With:] VALLANDIGHAM. Typed letter signed ("C.L. Vallandigham"), to A. McGreggor. Dayton, OH, 7 May 1861. 1 page, 4to, old creases. A letter critical of Lincoln's policies.
