Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY -- STEREOVIEWS]. A large and diverse group of more than 250 stereoviews highlighted by French tissue stereoviews, comprising:
6 x 3 3/4 in., or smaller, stereoviews on cardstock mounts (good to very good condition, toning to several images, some with soiling, scattered spotting; light to moderate corner and edge wear to mounts). Most include photographer's imprint to recto or verso, series title, and image title in negative or lower margin of mount recto.
Highlights include:
14 French tissue stereoviews providing exterior and interior views of landmarks in France (some prints with tears or small surface punctures, toning; soiling, edge and corner wear to some mounts). Several scenes with inscribed identification on verso. Locations such as Galerie du Salon des Fetes, Hotel de Ville, Versailles, Salon de réception at Château de Fontainebleau, and
La Madeleine, Paris.
[With:] 40+ stereoviews of the Middle East, 20 of which are credited to Edward L. WILSON, Philadelphia, PA, from his "Scenes on the Orient" series. Images of people at camp, temples and other ruins, and landscapes are included. Also included are 8 stereoviews of the Holy Land published by C.F. COPELAND, Brockton, MA, 3 stereoviews of Jerusalem and Palestine by James M. DAVIS, New York, and 12 stereoviews of Palestine and Greece published by J.F. JARVIS or STROHMEYER & WYMAN, New York.
[With:] 100+ stereoviews documenting the people, landmarks, and landscapes of Europe and Japan. At least 35 stereoviews focus on Italy, with several capturing the Vatican, most published by UNDERWOOD & UNDERWOOD, New York. Several stereoviews of Ireland, Switzerland, Scotland, England, and Spain are also enclosed, as well as 8+ images of Japanese natives published by UNDERWOOD & UNDERWOOD or STROHMEYER & WYMAN, New York.
