Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. A collection of 19th-20th century photographs and related materials, highlighted by an assortment of cased images and tintypes, incl. African American subject. 


Highlights include:

65+ tintypes, mostly portraits of men, women, and children, as well as outdoor views of a home and storefront, ranging in size from 3/4 x 1 in. tintypes on cardstock mounts to 7 x 10 in. (condition ranges from fair to very good, some with mild to heavy creasing, surface abrasions, edge and corner wear). Most are loose, with the exception of 6 tintypes that are housed in half or full cases. A 6 1/2 x 8 1/2 in. tintype of an African American gentleman and a 5 x 7 in. copy tintype portrait of a Civil War soldier are among the highlights.

[With:] 2 daguerreotypes of women, including a quarter plate portrait of a woman and a sixth plate portrait of a mother and child. -- 6 ambrotypes, comprised of 5 sixth plate ambrotypes and 1 ninth plate. What may be a later 19th century copy image on glass of an African American gentleman is included, as well as a cracked ambrotype of a young man and woman, and what appears to be a period copy image of a young man.

[With:] Leather album containing 15 CDVs of silhouettes depicting people, animals, and other wildlife, each with blindstamp of George Schmidt.

[With:] 6 3/4 x 8 1/4 in. image on glass of a snow covered waterfall scene, housed in 8 x 10 in. frame. -- 3 1/4 x 4 in. gold tinted portrait of a lovely young woman housed in damaged frame. -- 2 paper photographs, 6 1/2 x 4 3/4 in. or smaller, including what appears to be a view of smoke hovering over a city and an image of workers inside a grocery store. -- Real photo postcard a Picture Show building in Nelsonville, Ohio, with detailed inscription to verso describing the scene. -- Box containing group of 10 glass slides featuring photographs of people and sculpture, 3 1/2 x 1/2 in. -- Miniature celluloid mourning pin depicting woman. -- 5 hand-colored glass slides featuring playful illustrations of people and dogs, 5 x 1 1/4 in. -- Cramer's Manual on Negative Making and Formulas. [Also with:] 200+ unused paper sleeves, typically used to house tintypes, ranging in size from 1 3/4 x 2 3/4 in. to 4 3/4 x 6 1/2 in. -- Sampling of used mats and preservers in overall fair condition.
