Lot Description

Linen Day Dress à la 18th Century with Embroidery, 1870-80s

Yellow waist sash is not included.

This two-piece dress is dated to the late 19th century, but draws inspiration from styles popular in the 18th century with its use of trompe l'oeil embroidery; the skirt appears to be made of two parts—an under and an overskirt—but it is in fact made of one layer. e. A white ribbon is stitched to the center back neck, which suggests that this piece was once a museum artifact and deaccessioned before Mrs. Gutfreund purchased it at auction.
