Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Fortress Monroe, September 1862. New York: Jacob Cohen, 1862. Ferd. Mayer & Co. Lith.
18 x 23 1/4 in. (visible area) lithograph, matted and framed, 24 1/2 x 30 in. Some creasing throughout lithograph, and tear along lower right edge. Foxing throughout. Not examined outside frame, which shows some surface nicks/scratches. With locations identified in lower margin, including "Contraband Quarters."
Aerial view of Fortress Monroe, which is located at Old Point Comfort, the southern tip of the Virginia Peninsula, guarding the navigational channel between the Chesapeake Bay and Hampton Roads. The stone walls of the fort are completely surrounded by a moat, which was an unusual feature for a fort. The fort is presented as an orderly, well-equipped military installation partially encircled by buildings of the town of Hampton.
