Note:
Compare to a nearly identical example acquired by the Tate in 1966 from the collection of Nadia Nerina (reference no. T00825), which was one of six numbered casts made in 1965 from an unsigned plaster model purchased by Nerina from the Sculptures by Jules Dalou (1838-1902) exhibition at Mallett at Bourdon House in London in 1964. The unsigned plaster model from Mallett was cast after a terracotta maquette in the collection of the Petit Palais, musée des Beaux-arts de la Ville de Paris (no. PPS217). Nerina's sculpture in the Tate's collection is numbered 2/6 and similarly stamped with a Makers/ Hatfield & Son/ London foundry mark. The present casting is likely from the same edition of six.
