Canvas does not appear to be lined, and has very minor waviness, only visible under raking light; moderate deposits of surface dirt and dust; network of craquelures throughout, accompanied by visible fill and inpainting in scattered areas; a few minor areas of overcleaning in areas, including around the figures' heads in the center; uneven coloration through the sky, likely due to inpainting; under a highly reflective and glossy varnish. Under UV light: the thick varnish fluoresces green, prohibiting viewing of possible older inpainting; inpainting within the face of the brunette child, the monk's torso and lower portion of his robe, and in the blond child's elbow and skirt; strokes of inpainting; throughout the sky; areas of inpainting to the left of the figural group and a few areas in the rocks to the lower right.
