8vo. (Marginal chips to a couple of leaves.) 4pp. publisher's ads at end. Original oatmeal cloth decorated in red, black, and gilt, top edge stained yellow (renewed endpapers, spine lightly toned, a few light scattered stains to covers, light rubbing to extremes).

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with the top edge stained, printed on laid paper, and with the advertisements on p.235 reading "Gilbert Parker's Best Books." The Red Badge of Courage is "an extraordinary study of the common man amid the turmoil, clamor and distortion typified by war...its intensity, its startling yet inevitable descriptive phrase, struck a new note in American prose" (DAB).
