Verne, Jules (1828-1905). From the Earth to the Moon Direct in Ninety-Seven Hours and Twenty Minutes: and a Trip Round It. New York: Scribner, Armstrong & Company, 1874.
8vo (197 x 127 mm). Numerous wood-engraved plates including frontispiece. (Very minor cracking to center spine.) Original pictorial red cloth stamped in black and gilt (light rubbing to spine tail, spine leaning).
FIRST ILLUSTRATED AMERICAN EDITION, and the first obtainable American edition, with the advertisement for A Journey to the Centre of the Earth on the title-page verso. From the Earth to the Moon was only the second of Verne's works to be published in English. Though Verne's method of sending human beings into orbit was very different from that eventually used during the 20th century, the rough calculations used in figuring out trajectories and force thrust proved to be remarkably accurate given the lack of empirical data on the subject that was available at the time. The present edition was preceded by the 1869 Newark edition (of which only two copies are known) and contains From the Earth to the Moon as well as its sequel, Around the Moon, which was first published in Paris in 1869.
