Verne, Jules (1828-1905). A Journey to the Centre of the Earth. New York: Scribner, Armstrong & Co., 1874.
8vo (179 x 127 mm). Numerous woodcut illustrations. Original pictorial blue cloth stamped in gilt and black (spine rebacked with some rubbing, hinges repaired). Provenance: gift inscription.
FIRST AMERICAN DELUXE EDITION, first state with "Scribner, Armstrong & Co." on bottom of spine and printed on heavier paper. Journey to the Centre of the Earth was inspired by a 1859 visit Jules Verne made to Scotland, where he visited the extinct volcano Arthur's Seat and many other geological features. As often happened with translations from the original French into English, the translator made numerous changes, including adding chapter titles and even entire paragraphs. Myers 35; Taves & Michaluk V002.
