Research indicates that the photograph was originally taken by Alexander Gardner in 1872, although it has also been credited to William Henry Jackson.
These deluxe prints were produced by William Henry Jackson and distributed to members of Congress, whose assistance in securing increased appropriations for his department, F.V. Hayden, sought.
