A Pair of Fine English Needlework Samplers Worked by Sisters
Elizabeth Jones and Mary Jones, Dated, "1721" and "1724" Respectively
both worked in polychrome silk threads on a wool ground and with coordinating designs including pious verse with alternating colors for each word, the first, depicting central register with flowers, inscribed at bottom, "Elizabeth Jones Her Sampler Ended/ November the First in the Ninth Year/ of Her Age in the Year of Our Lord/ One Thousand Seven Hundred and Twenty-One"; the second, depicting central register with floral bouquet, floral sprays and urns, and lions, inscribed at bottom, "Mary Jones is my Name and England is my/ Nation/ Chelsea is my Dwelling Place/ and Christ is my Salvation/ in the 9 Year of Her Age/ in the Year of our Lord 1724"; both framed.

Note:
Elizabeth (born and christened on July 5th, 1713) and Mary (christened October 23, 1715) were sisters, both daughters of Josiah Jones and Elizabeth Waterman, who married on May 25, 1708 at St. Dunstan's Church, Stepney, London, and relocated to Chelsea. Elizabeth married Robert West at the Army Pensioners Hospital in Chelsea in 1735.
