Goldsmith Chandlee was born into a Nottingham, Maryland Quaker family of highly skilled clock and scientific instrument makers. Goldsmith was well known for his technically advanced surveying equipment. A shrewd business man, Chandlee was also civic minded, serving as a fire fighter, court Justice, and frequent executor of wills.

Pewter sundials by Goldsmith Chandlee may be found in the collections of Colonial Williamsburg and The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, Winchester, Virginia. The collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York has one of the few known Chandlee sundials in brass.
