Lot Note:
One of the early owners of the present lot was Mrs. Thomas Scott (née Annie Riddle), the wife of the president of the Pennsylvania Railroad and cousin of Mary Cassatt. A Pennsylvania native, Mrs. Scott expatriated to Paris in the 1880s, and it was there that she became part of Cassatt's inner circle and began building her art collection, which included an Édouard Manet, Jeune fille en déshabillé, that was later lent to the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Framed: 23 x 26 3/4 x 3 1/4 in.
Moderate deposits of surface dirt and dust, with some additional debris and fibers adhered to the reflective varnish; canvas is laid to board and margins are trimmed; network of craquelures throughout, mostly visible only under raking light. Under UV light: small areas of inpainting along the upper, right, and left edges; strokes of inpainting to the right corner and side of the basin in the lower center, as well as in the lower right corner within the ground; possible inpainting to the kneeling girl's shirt to the right of the basin.
