The Collected Library, Including Americana and Early Photography

Lot comprised of 64 albumen photographs, primarily oval-length portraits measuring approx. 7 x 5 in. (sight), and displayed under trimmed paper mats with period, manuscript identification in lower margin. A few photographs are mounted recto/verso, indicating that a small sampling were removed from albums. The majority of the photographs are uncredited. Images in overall good to very good condition. Most feature some toning and light spotting, with light to significant wear to mount edges and corners. Highlights include:

Approx. 36 oval-length photographs of identified men accompanied by photocopied documents assembled by the consignor with details pertaining to some of the identified subjects, such as residence, birth date, and occupation. Several individuals hail from Havana, New York, and an accompanying list of typed notes taken from the 1880 Census includes their occupations at that time, such as Clark M. Marsh (photographer), Andrew Misner (dealer in sewing machines), Edwin Close (harness maker), Davis Whippy (painter), Michael Coyle (pastor), W.W. Swarthout (brick mason), and S.J. Brown (coal merchant, District Deputy Grand Master of district of Chemung). Civil War veterans are also represented, including Clark P. Holmes (14th Connecticut Regiment), Wesley Stanley (141st New York Infantry), Dr. Arthur Hollett (189th New York Infantry), Ansel Roberts (3rd New York Infantry), Samuel Bailey (6th New York Infantry), Dr. Gilbert Bailey (6th New York Infantry, founding charter member of Havana Lodge #56), Hobart Lyon (5th New York Heavy Artillery), Henry Beach (9th New York Cavalry).
