The Collected Library, Including Americana and Early Photography

Lot comprised of approx. 100 photographs ranging in size from 2 1/4 x 3 3/4 in. to 7 x 8 1/2 in., documenting cities, towns, landmarks, landscapes, and events held throughout the United States, dating from the mid-19th century through the early 20th century. Images in varying conditions though most feature some toning or fading, and spotting, with wear to mount edges and corners. Highlighted scenes include:

Hancock House, Boston. A salt print, 3 3/4 x 4 3/4 in., on 5 1/2 x 8 in. page. The photograph was originally tipped in as a frontispiece from Homes of American Statesmen: with Anecdotal, Personal, and Descriptive Sketches, by Various Writers. New York: G.P. Putnam & Co., 1853. This was the first American book illustrated with an original photograph (title not included with lot) (some fading to print, spotting throughout print and mount). -- 4 photographs, approx. 3 1/2 x 3 1/4 in., mounted recto/verso on disbound album pages featuring views of Boston, ca 1859, including a fruit vendor at Boston Commons, Washington Street, and an interior of the Public Library. -- A series of approx. 74 anonymous photographs showcasing Boston, 5 x 7 in. (with cardstock mounts), including landmarks, landscapes, railroad and shipyard views, industrial scenes, occupational shots, and local subjects (images in fair to good condition, some prints faded, occasional toning). -- 3 cabinet cards of New Haven, Connecticut. Mount Holly, NJ: Lee & Cowgill. 5 1/2 x 7 3/4 in., on cardstock mount with photographer's imprint (toning and fading to print, spotting to print and mount). -- Photograph of the Spanish Flats in New York City, ink stamps indicate this was previously from the James F.
